Gordon Green (Green CGM 1953-61) writes:

“Doing some family research recently I unearthed the attached photograph of Form 4F taken at the end of Summer Term 1958 by our Form Master J E Cunningham who at the time taught English in Room 40 at the bottom of the stairs next to the Senior Gym Gallery.

OB Edward Mallinson (1958-68) writes.....

Whilst clearing through some papers I came across a photograph taken in the Delius Room either during the autumn of 1959 or the spring of 1960. The Illustrated London News were doing a feature on the school and this was part of the selection taken for inclusion. This photograph  was not published, possibly because Charles Hustwick had moved his music at an inopportune time!

I have attempted to identify the individuals  but am at a loss for two of them, hence the question marks. If it is of use let me know, if anyone can identify the missing names also please let me know. Needless to say I have not seen any of them in the past 40 years!

Phil Holman (Holman PM 1965 – 1974, younger brother of Holman JP, 1962 - 1970)

I was interested to read about David Lowe installing a Wurlitzer organ in to the Victoria Hall, Saltaire.  Whenever I see something about a Wurlitzer I have a certain pride as my great uncle Melbourne Holman (by grandfather’s brother) was the very first organist to play the only Wurlitzer 2Manual / 4Rank Model B that was ever brought over to England.  This was fitted out in the Palladium Picture Playhouse, Brixton, in 1926.  See http://cinematreasures.org/theater/14445/

Paul Snowden (1962-69)

Paul Snowden picture

Recently retired from Northern Rail.

Paul was responsible for planning the timetable for local train services in the North of England.

After leaving BGS he went on to Sheffield University, where he achieved the Degree of BA (Honours) in Russian Language and Literature in 1972.  He then joined British Rail in Leeds, where he also studied for Membership of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.

From 1976-78 he was attached to the Sheffield Division of British Rail for general management training, following which he occupied a succession of management posts as Traffic Manager at Knottingley and Skipton, where he was responsible for all signalling and station staff; then Area Retail Manager at Carlisle, responsible for all ticket and enquiry offices and customer service issues in Cumbria and on the Settle – Carlisle line.

In 1990 he moved to York as a member of the Regional Railways marketing team with a remit for liaison with major stakeholders such as PTEs, and then briefly joined the InterCity East Coast planning team, before returning to Regional Railways to take on responsibility for the timetable specification for Transpennine Express and West Yorkshire services.

On privatisation of the railways in 1994 Paul stayed in operations planning, eventually becoming responsible for planning all services with Arriva Trains Northern, and, when that franchise was merged with First North Western to form Northern Rail, all local services in the North.

When the opportunity for early retirement arose in 2007, Paul jumped at the chance to do something different, but for a couple of years stayed with the railway industry as a part time member of the project team implementing Network Rail’s new Integrated Train Planning System.  He has also assisted Northern Rail as a member of the project team planning the deployment of new and additional trains funded by the Department for Transport.

He is currently a Tour Manager for Great Rail Journeys, leading tours to European destinations by rail, as well as a Tutor with the Institution of Railway Operators, helping run the Planning and Performance Management Module of the Diploma and Degree courses.

Paul married Catherine in 1979, and they have two grown-up daughters.

The photo shows Paul in Switzerland at Jungfraujoch, which boasts the highest railway station in Europe.

Strike Action - the unearthing of a comedy classic

David Moore (1952-62) reports on the unearthing of a comedy classic. "A strike at BGS? Well, not quite, but in 1962 the Film Society, after 9 months' hard work, produced a short 15 minute comedy film entitled 'Strike Action'. This was no ordinary well-intentioned sixth form tour de force, it was an award winner of national stature."

The full report from David will be published in the summer edition of The Old Bradfordians News Magazine which will be posted out to all OBs on our database during July/August.
