Bacchus Cup Golf Competition - Wednesday 21 July 2010 at Shipley Golf Club

The entry for this year’s competition was the best for a number of years and it was good to see a number of new faces alongside many of the regulars.   There were twenty two Old Bradfordians competing for the Bacchus and six guests.

A heavy shower part way through the evening did not dampen the spirits and with no wind and receptive greens scoring was of a good standard.

The winner of the Bacchus Cup, with a total of 40 points, was Graham Scarbrough.  Four players scored 38 points but after a countback over the front nine holes, last year’s winner James Barker came second.  Third place went to John Jagger and fourth place to Brett Bannister.  The guest prize was won by Paul Anderson with a score of 35 points.

The golf was followed by an excellent dinner in the clubhouse.

Anyone wishing to play in 2010 should contact Roy Aspinall on 01226 725409 or e.mail royasp260747@aol.com.

BGS Races for Life Sunday 13 June 2010

On Sunday 13 June 2010 BGS was delighted to welcome OB Claire Varley (Nee Askew, 1993-95) and her family to join in Cancer Research's Race for Life in Bradford's Lister Park. Claire was joined by her sister Kate and 100 other girls and ladies from the BGS community. BGS has been fundraising for the event and should you wish to make a donation click here to go to the fundraising page

True Hoc Age spirit was demonstrated by Capt Helen Haigh (1998-2000) of the Royal Engineers who took part in the run in slightly warmer May temperatures than Bradford. She is 2 months into her 6 month tour of Afghanistan based at Kandahar Airfield (KAF) where she works in HQ Regional Command (South).

'On average the temperature reaches above 40c so unless you run in the morning the gym is usually the only option' says Helen, 'I am glad I could do my part to contribute to your Race for Life efforts and hope everyone back in Bradford enjoyed the day!'

Jacob captained the England U20s to victory against Argentina in their opening game of the Junior Rugby World Cup. On Wednesday 10 June Jacob led his team to their second victory when they beat Ireland 36-21.

In Rosario on June 13 the England U20s beat France 17 - 9 in Rosario. Jacob was rested for this match but was back in charge for their semi-final match against Australia. However the England Under 20s suffered semi-final heartache after they were beaten 28-16 by a clinical Australian side.

The England Under 20s made their last trip to the tribal surroundings of Newell's Old Boys football club in Rosario on Monday June 21, when they were beaten by South Africa in the 3rd/4th play-off game of the IRB Junior World Championships.

Alistair Brownlee (1998-2006) Triathlon World Champion Sunday 6 June 2010

Reigning ITU World Champion Alistair Brownlee proved that even an injury couldn't slow him down, when the 22-year-old claimed the title on a very hot day at the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship in Madrid for the second year in a row. It was Alistair's first race of the season after sitting out the opening two rounds of the Series due to a femoral stress fracture. Racing against some fierce competition including his younger brother Jonathan, Alistair charged to the finishing line, breaking the tape in 1:52:41. 'This win overshadows anything I did last year,' he said. “It was totally unexpected. This is by far the proudest victory I’ve ever had after what I’ve been through in the last couple of months.” Jonathan came 28th in the championship. Congratulations to both brothers from all of us at BGS!

Ajmal Shahzad, seen in practice before making his England Test debut at Old Trafford.

The 24 year old fast bowler made his England Test match debut in the victory against Bangladesh at Old Trafford on 3 June 2010, taking 4 wickets in the match. Ajmal has previously represented England at one-day level and was a member of their World Twenty20 trophy-winning squad last month but this was his first selection to play Test cricket for England. He became the 650th player to play Test cricket for England and was also the first Yorkshire-born Asian man to represent England in the five-day format.

His appearance in Andrew Strauss's team as a replacement for his Yorkshire team-mate Tim Bresnan comes just four months after he was first picked to be in the Test party. Click here to read more about Ajmal Shahzad.

Well done Ajmal what an achievement!

Annual Golf Match - The Old Bradfordians v The School - 21 April 2010

This annual match is always eagerly contested and so it proved again. The School, captained by Tom Oxley, were fielding a fairly young team, however, they were not overawed by the occasion and played some excellent golf.

All of the matches were tight with the Old Bradfordians running out the winners by 3 matches to 1.

A special thank you to Grainne Heywood for selecting and accompanying the school team.

Bacchus Cup Competition held at The Shipley Golf Club on Wednesday 15th July 2009

For once the weather forecast proved accurate. Heavy showers in the morning gave way to a warm sunny afternoon to be enjoyed by the eighteen old Bradfordians competing for the Bacchus Cup. Three Old Bradfordians had also brought guest golfers. The Shipley course was in the best condition for many years and several players took advantage of this to post good scores.

The winner of the Bacchus Cup, with an excellent total of 39 points, was James Barker.  In second place, with 36 points, was Robert Ackroyd, who just pipped Alan Gaunt after a countback over the front nine holes.  Neville Core came fourth with 35 points.

The guest prize was won by Dennis Wheatley from Masham Golf Club with a score of 33 points.

Following the golf, dinner was served in the Clubhouse and we were pleased to see Ian Bentley joining us for the meal.

Anyone wishing to play in 2010 should contact Roy Aspinall on 01226 725409 or e.mail royasp260747@aol.com.
