Founded in 1896 by a group of prominent Old Boys of Bradford Grammar School then living in London, The Old Bradfordians' Club (London) Ltd was incorporated in 1913 in its present form as an independent club to provide a point of contact mainly for those Old Bradfordians resident in Greater London and, broadly speaking, in the South of the country. Our main objective is to provide opportunities for Old Bradfordians to meet together to enjoy a regular programme of dinners and other social functions. As a corollary, we contribute to a 6th Form Scholarship at the School, and we make other charitable donations in support of the School and its pupils, both past and present. We maintain close links with the School and with the Old Bradfordians Association in Bradford, although the Club is quite separate from the Bradford OBA and the School.
Today we have a flourishing Club of some 280 members, male and female, with an age range from 20+ to 80+. Many members are in the 25-45 age group, and a potential new member need have no fear that he/she would be joining a group of predominantly older men. There is no entry fee, and the life membership subscription is only £25 (annual membership £5).
Our regular meetings are quite informal. We do not normally have a speaker, just a convivial evening with a good pub meal (subsidised cost £15 - under 25s and over 70s may eat free), wine provided at the Club's expense, and the opportunity for members to meet and chat with old and new friends with familiar accents! In addition, each November we hold a formal Ladies' Night Dinner at the Carlton Club for members and their spouses or partners, and there are other occasional social events such as barbecues. Members are of course equally welcome to attend these events by themselves.
Our regular meetings, usually attended by about 30 diners, are held on the last Tuesday of January, February, March, April, June, September and October each year at The Devereux Hotel, Devereux Court, Essex Street (opposite the Law Courts), Strand, London WC2, at 6.15 pm, for dinner at about 7.15 pm. If you would care to join us, just give David Ellis, our Secretary, a ring on 01525 237505 or send him an e-mail at d.b.ellis@btinternet.com a few days before the meeting to let him know that you are coming, and just turn up. You can be sure of a warm welcome, and potential new members dine on their first visit as guests of the Club. If you cannot make dinner, the meal is usually over by about 8.45 pm and you would be very welcome to look in for a drink; members are usually around until about 10.30 pm.
We look forward to seeing you.
