The Drummond Studentship Trust

The Eliza and James Drummond Studentship was set up in 1911 by James Drummond of Ilkley, the then President of the London Old Bradfordians Club, in memory of his late wife Eliza.  The purpose of the Studentship is to assist former pupils to continue ‘any special studies necessary for their careers’ that will do honour to the School and themselves.  The Trust deed states that a studentship award may be made ‘in any case where it would seem likely to give needed assistance to a promising career in Art, Music, Science, and professions or business.’  The studentships are open to former pupils of Bradford Grammar School who have attended the school for not less than two school years.  They are tenable for a period not exceeding one year and may, at the discretion of the Committee, be renewable for further periods, not exceeding three years.

The London Old Bradfordians Club is very keen to encourage past pupils of the school to apply next year and in the future.  Most applicants are university graduates with at least a 2:1 degree.  However, someone who left school to work, for example, and is now thinking of re-training for a career change would also be eligible for consideration so university graduation is not mandatory.

In 1911 the Drummond Studentship was £80.  Since 1993 annual grants of £900 and sometimes more have been made, and the London OBA is constantly seeking to augment the fund with a view to increasing this amount in the future.  To date over 200 Old Bradfordians have benefited from the trust.  In September 2009 the Drummond Studentship was awarded to Rebecca Crabtree ('00 - '04). There were several other strong candidates all deserving of support. Fortunately, the Old London Club agreed to make additional money available so that the Fund could make assistance awards to other applicants. The recipients of these additional awards were: Chris Bentley ('74 - '04). Lila Palmer ('01 - '03), Sophie Wellings, ('99 - '04) and Ashley Wright ('99 - '06). In September 2008 Drummond Studentships were awarded to Lucy Qureshi (’93-‘95), Adam Marks (’93-‘03) and Peter Wright (’95-‘05).  The standard of applications was extremely high and that is reflected in the Committee’s decision to award an unprecedented three awards in one year.  Click here to read a profile of the awardees.

The Drummond Committee attended by the trustees meets on the last Tuesday in September to decide upon awards for the coming academic year.  The closing date for applications is 31st July.   Application forms are available from The James and Eliza Drummond Studentship Fund at the London Club's Registered Office (currently 36, Sherbourne Drive, Maidenhead SL6 3EP) or by e-mailing chad.woodward@bis.gsi.gov.uk.  E-mail contact is preferred as it eases administration.

Donations to the Trust

Old Bradfordian's who are able to do so are invited to make a donation to help towards increasing the Capital of the fund, which through use and inflation has decreased over the years, in order to enable the purposes of the fund to continue to be fulfilled effectively. Please get in touch with the Hon Secretary (address above) if you wish to make a donation or to discuss this or any aspect of the Trust.
